In 1919, Y Camp began on a small piece of land nestled along the banks of the Des Moines River. Led by director Howard Crawford, young boys set up their tents in the wooded valley, connecting with nature and one another. Over the next 100+ years, Y Camp would grow to span nearly 400 acres and bring about countless friendships, memories, and life-changing experiences. While much has changed over the last century, our mission remains intact: bringing people together to build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
Today, over 13,000 children and families from around the globe fill the scenic retreat each year with songs, laughter, and adventure. There is something meaningful for everyone—like conquering fears on the rock wall or zip line, trying new adventures with horseback riding and archery, or the sense of belonging found around the campfire.
Y Camp spans generations, having served as a home away from home for many throughout the years. Since it's creation in 1930, the Family Camp program has helped families connect with one another and disconnect from the distractions and stresses of life. It's an opportunity to focus on what matters most: the ones we love. Many families have made this into a valuable tradition, gathering everyone from infants to grandparents to celebrate the bonds of family.
We believe everyone deserves to experience the magic of Y Camp, regardless of income level or background. Through our financial assistance program, we are able to make the friendships, lessons, and life-changing experiences of Y Camp available to all.
